My Favorite Porch Reads

Since travel is not really the best idea right now, I, like many others have been spending a lot of time at home trying to past the time with any form of entertainment possible. Personally, I have dived into numerous worlds on my bookshelf to both escape and reflect on this crazy world we have found ourselves in. Unlike beach reads, which are still low-key some of my favorite books, I feel like porch reads are easy on the surface but have a deeper meaning that can spark conversation, inspiration, or even just critical thinking. These are by no means scholarly on unaccessible, but perfect for sitting on your porch with a cup of coffee and reflecting on what you are reading to the sounds of bird chirping and wind chimes.

Crazy Rich Asian Series by Kevin Kwan

One of my absolute favorite series! It's as if Gossip Girl and every soap opera ever were mixed with The Real Housewives but cranked up to 11. Like Kwan was not lying when he said CRAZY. If you're looking for a nice, strong trilogy with intriguing characters and shocking twists and turns, this is for you.

Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks

When I say this BROKE ME. I know Nicholas Sparks is the literal definition of cliché but I do not care because I love him and will continue to let his books bring me to tears. What I particularly liked about Two by Two is that though it had love and relationship problems, the story was rooted in the complexities of a father and young daughter's relationship and was ultimately about the importance of family, not just the importance of getting the girl.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

One of my favorite reads of 2019!! It instantly hooked me and kept me holding on through all the twists and turns. Not only is it a thrilling ride, the moral and ethical dilemmas the characters are forced to reckon with takes it a step above a domestic fiction to make the reader truly question and analyze real world problems.

Sula by Toni Morrison

So I have been a Toni Morrison fan since about three lines into the first book of her's I had read in college (The Bluest Eye) but after not 100000% getting on board with Beloved, Sula truly brought me back to the heart and soul of Morrison's message. When I say I have never read a more beautiful book, I mean it. The story, the characters, the metaphors are just... wow.

Beach Read by Emily Henry

So, I know what you are thinking, it is literally called Beach Read, so it should be included in a list of books to read on the beach, right? Wrong. The only thing I even remotely disliked about the book was the title and cover. They go to the beach like twice and it's a beach on a lake in the Midwest so I feel content putting it on this list. It's honestly the best book I have read so far this year and let me feeling inspired and lead to amazing conversations about gender, self-worth, resilience, and the complexities of the people around you.
