Black Owned Sustainable and Ethical Brands
Many components go into how we spend our money. Some people only care about price, some about the impact of the environment, and others just want something pretty. I like to think my prioritizes fall somewhere in the middle, buying different things to fulfill different priorities. But this year especially, I have begun to focus more on the idea of sustainability and ethics in my buying choices. Not to say I am a Sustainability Queen or anything, but I truly believe the best way for us as a world to continue on is everyone making continuous small positive choices over just a few people living with 4 earthly possessions. These smaller Black Owned brands have been able to make beautiful, useful products in an ethical and sustainable way, and maybe some of the larger brands should be taking notes...
I have included Black Owned businesses that have ethical practices that fall under people, planet, and animals. People meaning they pay their employees fairly, provide safe facilities, and their supply chain is conflict-free. Planet meaning they take advantage of the 3 Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) or try to offset their footprint in some way. And finally, animals meaning they are either vegan, cruelty free, or utilize animal stock that would otherwise be discarded.
I also looked at the idea of longevity and usefulness because the most sustainable buy is the one you don't have to make! We all love buying cheap Forever 21 jewelry a few times a year, but if you can take that money and buy a singular piece it's better for everyone, plus you are helping a small Black Owned business in the process.
A beautiful and dainty jewelry brand who utilizes ethically sourced conflict-free gold from Africa.
Paper goods made from 100% recycled material.
One stop shop for those looking for transparency from the brands they buy from.
Small batch multi-use beauty products to minimize what you need to buy, made with ethically sourced ingredients.
A certified Climate Neutral small batch Los Angeles made clothes which avoid overproduction and ship plastic free.
Quality and long lasting leather goods made from locally sourced distressed/damaged leather to limit waste.
A hip fashion brand that utilizes small batch drops with headstock fabric that would usually be thrown away.
Handmade earrings made from recycled leather.
Beachwear handcrafted in Ethiopia that is committed to empowering women, keeping the culture alive, and ending the poverty cycle.
Shoes ethically handcrafted by Argentinian shoemakers in small batches, reducing waste and energy.
I also wanted to take a moment and highlight Blk + Grn, the Amazon for Black Artisans! Everything they sell is Black Owned and has to pass their rigorous standards of being quality, non-toxic, plant based, and cruelty free! They offer a wide range or beauty and personal care as well as some of the most beautiful home decor! Now, excuse me as I go completely revamp my medicine cabinet.
At the end of the day, we need to show our values with what we buy, so if buying ethically sourced beautiful pieces from Black Owned businesses, this is a great place to start.
